1. Book your elevator early

If you're moving into or out of a condo or apartment building in Vancouver, your strata or building manager almost certainly requires an elevator booking. Most buildings:

  • Require 2–4 weeks' notice — popular dates fill fast.
  • Charge a $200–$500 refundable damage deposit.
  • Limit moves to specific hours (commonly 9 AM–5 PM Mon–Sat, never Sundays).
  • Require elevator pads — usually installed by building staff.

Call your building manager as soon as you have a firm move date. Lock in the elevator before you book the truck.

2. Parking permits & loading zones

Vancouver requires a temporary parking permit to reserve street space for a moving truck in many zones. Apply through the City of Vancouver:

  • Cost: ~$15–$80 depending on zone and duration.
  • Apply 3+ business days in advance. Same-day applications are rarely approved.
  • If your building has a designated loading bay, you usually don't need a permit — but confirm with the building manager.
  • In residential permit zones (much of the West End, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant), expect to need a permit.

3. The cheapest days to move

Movers in Vancouver charge a premium for weekends and the 1st and 15th of each month. Save 15–30% by booking:

  • Tuesday–Thursday, mid-month.
  • Off-season (October–April) — summer is peak.
  • Morning slots — the day's first move runs the most on-time.

4. Neighborhood quirks

West End & Downtown

Narrow streets, lots of one-ways, limited loading zones. Permits are almost always required. Elevators are mandatory in most buildings. Expect tight timelines.

Kitsilano

Mix of houses and low-rises. Street parking permits common. Watch for street cleaning days — your truck will get ticketed.

Mount Pleasant & Main Street

Lots of older walk-ups without elevators. Plan for stairs — and factor in extra movers.

Yaletown & Coal Harbour

Almost all high-rises with strict elevator policies and concierge sign-ins. Book well in advance.

East Vancouver (Commercial Drive, Hastings-Sunrise)

Easier parking, more lane access. Great for DIY moves with a rental truck.

North & West Vancouver

Bridge traffic can wreck your timeline. Move before 9 AM or after 10 AM, and avoid Friday evenings entirely.

Richmond, Burnaby, Delta, New West

Generally easier than the City of Vancouver — more parking, fewer permit requirements. Still confirm with your strata.

5. The Vancouver moving checklist

  1. 6 weeks out: Book your movers and elevator. Order moving boxes.
  2. 4 weeks out: Apply for parking permits. Start decluttering.
  3. 2 weeks out: Forward your mail. Notify ICBC, BC Hydro, Fortis BC, your bank.
  4. 1 week out: Receive your Gorilla Box delivery. Start packing non-essentials.
  5. Moving day: Cash for tips, snacks, phone chargers, and the kettle in a clearly labeled box.
  6. After: Schedule your box pickup — we collect them when you're done.

6. Why reusable boxes are perfect for Vancouver

Rain. The Vancouver moving truth no one warns you about: it will probably rain on your move. Cardboard boxes get soggy and collapse — taking your books, lamps, and dignity with them. Plastic Gorilla Boxes are water-resistant, stackable, and don't need to be flattened and recycled afterward. We deliver them straight to your door and pick them up when you're unpacked.
